Let’s get to the point: you’re probably applying your sunscreen wrong, too infrequently, or in amounts too small for proper protection. Don’t worry– I’ve been there: you’re having way too much fun in the sun and reapplying SPF isn’t on your mind. Maybe you’re not planning on partaking in an outdoor activity, so you don’t think you necessarily need it.

The truth of the matter is, any time you are going to have skin exposed to the sun, you should be protecting it from the sun’s rays. Not only do you want to avoid the discomfort of a burn, but fighting signs of aging, sun damage and cancer is made way easier with SPF.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and the number used to describe its ability reflects how long the protection lasts. For example, SPF 30 prevents visible reaction (like sunburn) 30x longer than if you weren’t wearing sunscreen at all. Despite this, all sunscreens should be reapplied every two hours (or more often when swimming/sweating) to maintain protection of all sun effects– visible or not.

So what type of sunscreen should you choose, and when do you apply it? Wear a minimum of SPF 15 daily, which blocks 93% of UVB rays. As your SPF goes up, you’re actually adding only a little more protection (SPF 30 blocks 97%, SPF 50 blocks 98%), so don’t worry about splurging on higher SPF unless you’re extremely sensitive. Each application should be equivalent to a shot glass.

Your sunscreen needs at least thirty minutes to settle into your skin before heading into the sun for it to work its best. Apply while you’re still at home as part of your morning routine before starting a day in the sun.

Walgreens brand suncare is affordable and effective, so that’s typically the route I go when stocking up on sun protection. I have two SPF products that I rely on for my daily sun protection that makes remembering to apply (and reapply) easy.

The Walgreens Moisturizing Sunscreen Spray is my daily go-to for my arms and legs daily. The continuous spray makes it easy and quick to apply before I head out. They’re a new addition, and are oxybenzone free, Paraben free, oil free and hypoallergenic. I like how it makes my skin feel soft and hydrated while it protects, which is so important here in the desert! I keep it on my kitchen counter to remind myself to spray some on before leaving every day. When applying, I be sure that I see an even sheen over my skin to ensure I’ve applied enough.

The Walgreens Sheer Sunscreen Stick is my secret sun weapon. It’s small and convenient, making it the perfect sun care item to throw in my purse for on-the-go applications, whether I’ve forgotten to use the spray in the morning, or I need to reapply after a few hours. The formula is lightweight and dries down, so I don’t have to worry about residue. It also has a subtle floral scent, which adds a fun pick-me-up during my day when topping off. The stick packaging makes application quick and easy, and definitely more discreet than a huge spray bottle. Because I’m constantly rummaging through my bag for my phone, keys, or lip balm, I’m always reminded when I see the sunscreen stick to reapply often!

As an added bonus, when you buy one Walgreens brand sun care item along with a bottle of smartwater, you get $1 off for Balance Rewards members! It’s a perfect pairing all summer long, until 8/26.
