When you check Pinterest or Instagram for beauty vanity and makeup storage inspiration, chances are you’re going to see a sea of white. White-on-white home decor is definitely having a moment because of the clean and chic look it brings to a room. It’s essentially a blank canvas, letting all your beauty products on display take the stage.
But personally, I’m craving a little bit of color! Since we’re getting ready to move, I’ve been brainstorming what I want my beauty room to look like in our new house. (Yes, I’m getting a beauty room! Squee!) I’m also trying to see how I can upcycle old pieces I currently own for a new, exciting look.
I’ve had this small drawer set for a while now- white and plain as can be. Instead of donating them and picking a new- and probably expensive— storage solution, I decided to freshen this one up affordably with a bold color and daring design. Keep reading to see how I did the easy paint makeover for my white drawers to make them a statement piece.
1(Optional) Create Your Border
Make sure your drawer is clean and dry. Start by sectioning off any corners or edges you don’t want to paint. Cover them completely in the painters tape, and press firmly to seal.
2Plan Your Design
I wanted to paint a pseudo-argyle design with diamonds. I started by creating the large diamond, then taping a large X through the entire face of the drawers. Because I wanted the design continuous, I used long sections of tape to create edges that lined up more quickly.
Layer the paint evenly on all white areas, painting right up to the tape. It’s okay if you paint over the tape, too. Do two coats for a completely opaque appearance.
4Peel to Reveal the Design
Once your paint is completely dry, you’re ready to peel off the tape! Go slowly and pull in the direction of the tape. Your edges should turn out clean and straight- if your paint isn’t 100% dry, you may end up pulling some of the paint off. If you’re not sure whether or not it’s dry, leave the project alone for several hours to be on the safe side.
You’re done! Touch up any edges that need it, then clean your paint brush for future use.
I love the pop of color and character that these drawers give my beauty space! Does this project inspire you to paint? There’s no better time to experiment, since it’s National Painting Week!
